January 15, 2013 - BYOD, or bring your own device, is the use of personal devices in the workplace to access company resources such as email, file servers and databases as well as personal applications.
BYOD was the hot topic of 2012, and industry experts expect the trend to spiral in 2013. Ian Kilpatrick, chairman of Wick Hill Group, has identified BYOD as the top IT trend for 2013, saying
"BYOD was arguably the biggest buzz word of 2012 and is now an unstoppable, user-driven wave which will continue to make a major impact on the IT world in 2013 and beyond."
The increasing popularity of BYOD is a result of the extensive host of benefits it offers to both businesses and employees. Employees using their own devices enjoy higher job satisfaction and improved mobility, resulting in increased efficiency and productivity.
A recent survey carried out by iPass identified that "employees who use mobile devices for both work and personal issues put in 240 more hours per year than those who do not." As well as a happier and more productive workforce, businesses benefit from a simplified IT infrastructure, cost savings on hardware, and with employees responsible for the upkeep of their own devices, a reduction in device management, troubleshooting and support.
BYOD is not without its challenges, however. It is far more difficult to ensure the security of sensitive data and applications when the smart phone holding it is taken on nights out for example, and can easily be lost or stolen. With a broad range of devices in use throughout an organisation, IT teams may lack the specialist knowledge needed to help support users with their devices. Issues may also arise around ownership of devices.
A BYOD strategy is essential to enable businesses to benefit from BYOD, yet remain protected from risk and to prevent issues arising. Join Prodec Networks (http://prodec.co.uk) and partners HP, the HP User Group, Meru Networks and Palo Alto Networks for an exclusive insight into BYOD strategy.
